Our feet change as we age, and seemingly simple issues can lead to more serious health concerns. Here are five care steps to help keep feet healthy.
Each night, wipe feet down with warm water and a washcloth. Moisturize with lotions that have lanolin or petroleum jelly.
An overgrown or ingrown toenail could impair mobility and balance, leading to falls.
Avoid footwear that rubs or has slippery soles. If you have diabetes or neuropathy, talk with your provider about prescription orthotics.
Those with chronic illnesses like diabetes may have reduced circulation in their lower legs and feet. While sitting, prop your feet up on a pillow. Gently rub your feet from time to time.
While things like bunions, discolored toenails and calluses may seem harmless, it’s important to get them checked out.
If you find it difficult to complete foot care, talk to your primary care provider (PCP). Many podiatrists and PCPs offer nail trimming for older adults or those with diabetes.
